Scanning

Photo Scanning

We scan photographs at 300dpi and 600dpi. Your images will be croppd, rotated correctly and saved individually. Repair, colour correction, adjusting for brightness, contrast, and saturation will be quoted when we review the photos with the client.

It is important to note that no two image projects are alike. The initial scanning process plays a crucial role in how your final images will, or can be used. We can supply any format, such as .TIFF, JPEG, .PSD, .PNG, or .GIF.

As a rule, traditional paper printers prefer .TIFF files at 300 or 600 dpi, in CMYK.

JPEG and PNG images at 72 dpi, optimized for web use, conform to 'best web practices'.

Should you want to create a DVD image gallery or fill a digital photo frame, we will be happy to offer our best recommendations.

Negative Scanning

Negatives, or film strips, offer the most image data when it comes to scanning. We recommend resolutions of 2,000 to 4,000 dpi, depending on the end use. As with all scanning, a good quality original scan is crucial to meeting your requirements.

Negatives have a tendancy to curl or bend over time, especially if not stored properly, and are very susceptible to dust and scratches. Proper handling of a negative, and proper focus and adjustment or the scanner are necessary to get the best results.

Slide Scanning

Slides require more care than  prints because the differences in case thickness make it more difficult to focus the image correctly. Automated systems will make somewhat decent scans of slides, but for the best clarity these must be focused individually in addition to all the rest.

Slides are typically scanned at resolutions ranging from 1,200 to 2,400 dpi.

Vector Conversion & Enhancement

The secret to really great looking graphics is in how they are prepared. In commercial art, graphics like logos and text are a means of grabbing someone's attention. Clean, sharp images convey professionalism and will be memorable.

At Vancouver Island Image Scanning we can take even a poor quality logo, graphic or glyph and turn it into a highly flexible and versatile vector graphic. What this means is that from this one file you will be able to have a printer ready graphic for anything from the size of a postage stamp to a billboard. We can provide vector files in .EPS or .IA. which will allow you to size your image to whatever you require. You can then easily produce any other format such as, .JPEG, .GIF, .PDF, .PSD, .PNG, .TIFF.

The best thing is, you only need to do this once! The costs for all future printing projects and the related file preparation costs will be nominal. And you will always look great!

Below are some examples of our work.
